Bundy, so far, has been successful as a starter though he got a bit lucky against the Giants who were hitting him hard, but right at fielders. Still, I didn't expect this out of him so soon. The only question is how long can he keep this up? He has a 1.45 ERA in August with only eight hits and four walks allowed in 18.2 IP with 19K. It's truly phenominal, but I can't get too excited about him yet. He's 23 which is great, but will the elbow hold up? Can he stay healthy? Is he really this good or will there be a major adjustment by the league in the near future and if so, will Bundy be able to adjust back and how long will it take? If what we're seeing now is the real deal, I think the Orioles will have their true ace. If he stays healthy and brings his cutter back, that's just scary because that was his best pitch when we signed him. Bundy struggled more against the Giants than we've ever seen him since his velocity has come back. The TB start looks to have been nothing more than nerves at this point as opposed to struggling due to a lack of something or being overmatched. The Giants were just squaring him up and hitting line drives all over the field after he had looked so good in the previous three starts, but they only hit them where our defenders were standing. The Red Sox are pretty hot at this point, so I guess we'll find out where the league is on Bundy here. It's also nice that he doesn't really have a problem with walks. Bundy has very lucky numbers against Boston and had to pitch out of quite a few jams. He didn't have his stuff then, though.

After a rough start, Price has gotten better as the season has gone on. His ERAs by month are as follows: April (5.76), May (4.62), June (4.08), July (2.80) and he has struggled a bit in August to a 4.50 ERA. Price has also gone eight innings in seven of the last 14 starts including the last one. Price allowed five runs in five innings back in April against the Orioles, but went eight innings against them in June allowing three runs in a 3-2 loss which was also against Chris Tillman. His career numbers against the Orioles and at Camden Yards are dominating to very good. There are many guys in the current Orioles lineup who hit him well, though. Price has never taken a loss at Camden Yards at a perfect 4-0 in eight starts.

The Orioles try to play the "sleep for the first six innings, then come back in the last three" card again after beating the Giants like that, but fall short against Boston to lose 5-3. Mookie Betts just continues to slaughter the Orioles at the Yards and the Orioles caught a break with E-Rod having to leave with hamstring tightness throwing a no hitter. He really did look good, but caused Boston to dip into the bullpen more than they wanted to. Abad continues to be abad since being traded to Boston and played a role in allowing the Sox to tie up the game at three. Fortunately for them, Betts hit his second homer off of the struggling Brach who I think is on the downswing now after being abused in the first half of the season. He has a 4.15 (1.62/.250) in six August appearances after posting sub-2 ERAs in all prior months. Boston has won five in a row.

The Orioles can not fall back on the non-strategy of late inning comebacks that worked in June. It's nice to see when it happens, but it wasn't sustainable then and it's certainly not now. The Orioles are not the same team they were in June. They're tired and they're scoring fewer runs nor do opposing pitchers pitch them the same way now which makes it harder to hit the home runs this team needs to win games. Since blowing their wad in June and heading to Seattle to begin their four game series, the Orioles are 19-22.

With Tillman being pushed back due to shoulder discomfort, Bundy gets the go here against Price. It will be interesting to see how Bundy looks now that he's on a familiar mound again and Price pitches well against the Orioles and in this park. I tend to believe this is genuine shoulder discomfort and not some flimsy reason to push him back because if Buck wanted to skip Tillman to rest him, why would he have to feign shoulder discomfort to do that? Bundy has been hot, but the guy you want on the mound here is Chris Tillman. He's your #1 and has pitched well this season which is his fourth season out of five pitching like this. He's the guy you want starting this game and there is no way you push him back to the Houston series and basically say any of those games are more important than this one against Boston which will decide whether the Orioles are a second place team or a third place team and a game where the Orioles can have a direct and instant impact to their place in the division standings as well as the place of their division rival Red Sox. Tillman has great numbers against Boston and he would be the ideal matchup against Price in a game that is very important for both teams. Time will tell with him, I guess, but I think Tillman is Buck's #1 guy. Why put all that pressure on Bundy by bumping the ace of the Oriole staff back for a game of this magnitude? Anyway, if Tillman really is hurt, the Orioles chances of hanging in this thing are slim. Tillman has been the stopper all season for this club and the Orioles need him badly.

Toronto crushed the Yankees today and truly came to life which could be the beginnings of a Blue Jays hot streak. The Yankees were up 5-0 going into the fifth inning and got another run after a 42 minute rain delay in the middle of the fifth inning to go up 6-0 after five. Unfortunately for them, Toronto must have done some serious thinking and decided they should probably start trying harder if they want to make the playoffs. They responded with four runs in the sixth and eight runs in the eighth inning to win 12-6. Martin had two homers and one for both Tulo and Encarnacion and put the Blue Jays back in first all by themselves. Detroit lost their second in a row and Houston their third in a row. Seattle lost to the Angels having blown a lead twice in that game which leaves them three games back of the WC with Detroit 3.5 back and Houston 5.5 back. I think the only way the Orioles make the playoffs is if no one else gets in the WC race. Right now, the ALE has both spots and no one has been knocking on the door since Detroit was briefly there a couple weeks ago.

I also believe in them. Not in the numbers necessarily, but I do believe certain types of pitchers are better match-ups for certain types of hitters.

I think you are better off at looking how hitters do against pitch types instead.

Anyway just saw this.

Stern? I don't know, said advanced scouting and the Sox patient batters will be his first real rocky start.

I consider his first start rocky.

But what do I know I'm not on the radio.

Maybe he gets lit up today, but that doesn't make what he has done recently a product of luck.

      The 1997 Orioles started 50-23 (111 win pace) and finished 98-64. It's rare for a team to stay this hot for all 162 games.

      To be honest, it depends on whether the division would be a step down, a step up, or expected. In 2022, everyone would have been overjoyed at 3WC. In 2023, we would have been furious. Now expectations are high. A WC is still playoffs but a huge disappointment. Not just considering the importance of a first round bye and R&R for the guys, anything less than a division title is a disappointment.  The division is the goal of the season. And I hate the Yankees. And I’m annoyed every time we lose a game we should have won.

      Bummer that it's a full TJ, which is a longer recovery than the brace. Hope it works out for him. It sucks, he only got 44.1 major league innings out of his first surgery. Maybe the fact that they were very good innings helps make sure someone takes a chance on him.  It'll be almost 5 years post no-hitter by the time he can take a big league mound again.

      I think the O's should consider matching and upping what other teams might be offering.  It might only be a minor league deal.  Even if the prognosis is really good I doubt the O's do anything like a qualifying offer, but bringing him back on a small deal makes sense.

      Are they better than the 2022 Yankees?  That team had a better record at this point in the season than this year’s Yankees.   The ‘22 team did win the division, but only won 99 games after starting 49-16.  They went 50-47 after their crazy hot start.  Teams don’t defy gravity forever.
